Echoes of Orin – Afrofuturist Graphic Comic
Echoes of Orin is a short, dark, and epic Afrofuturist cartoon-style graphic comic set in the vibrant yet turbulent city of Lagos. The story follows a mysterious protagonist navigating a futuristic, neon-lit metropolis where tradition and technology clash, uncovering secrets that could change the fate of their world.
The project was designed to merge African cultural aesthetics with futuristic storytelling, blending bold character design, dynamic panel layouts, and rich world-building. The inspiration came from a mix of Nigerian folklore, Afrofuturist literature and art, and cyberpunk cityscapes, with a focus on portraying Lagos as more than just a setting. Themes of heritage, identity, and the tension between progress and tradition are woven throughout.
The creative process began with storyboards and script design to capture the energy of each scene, followed by digital refinement to bring characters and environments to life. I used Procreate for initial concept art and panel sketching, Adobe Photoshop for inking, shading, and texture work, and Adobe Illustrator for vector-based elements and clean graphic layouts. This combination of tools allowed me to experiment freely in the early stages while producing crisp, professional final pages.
